emergency room (abbr. ER) (NAmE) = accident and emergency :the part of a hospital where people who need urgent treatment are taken ph.(医院的)急诊室 (104.Receptionist: Hey! No rough holding in my ER!)

lead in 引进

Chandler: (to the receptionist)'Scuse me.

receptionist :a person whose job is to deal with people arriving at or telephoning a hotel, an office building, a doctor’s surgery, etc. n.接待员

Receptionist: (holds up her hand—she is on the phone) It says to call this number if you're not completely satisfied with this candy bar. Well, I'm not completely satisfied.

Chandler: Listen, it's kind of an emergency. Well, I guess you know that, or we'd be in the predicament room. (The receptionist glares at him.)

emergency :a sudden serious and dangerous event or situation which needs immediate action to deal with it 紧急情况;突然事件

predicament :difficult or unpleasant situation, especially one where it is difficult to know what to do n.尴尬的处境,困境

Receptionist: (on phone) Hold on. (To Chandler) Fill these out, sit over there. (Tosses him some forms.)

fill sth out=fill sth in :to complete a form, etc. by writing information on it 填写

toss :to throw sth lightly or carelessly

Ross: (jumping to his feet) Look, I don't wanna make any trouble, okay, but I'm in a lot of pain here, alright? My face is dented. 

jump :[v + adv. / prep.] to move quickly and suddenly

dent :to make a hollow place in a hard surface, usually by hitting it vt.使凹下

Receptionist: Well, you'll have to wait your turn. 

wait your turn :wait until your turn comes

Joey: Well, how long do you think it'll be?

Receptionist: (sarcastic) Any minute now.

Ross: Hey, this- (she gives him a look and the guys back off) Heyy…

back off :give up a claim to sth;yield 放弃对某事物的要求

[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, the slumber party continues.]

Rachel: I'm so sorry, you guys. I didn't mean to bring you down.

bring sb down :to make sb lose power or be defeated 使…情绪低落消沉

Monica: No, you were right. I don't have a plan. (There's a knock on the door.)

Pizza Guy: (yelling from outside) Pizza guy!

Rachel: Thank God. Food. (She goes to answer the door.)

Monica: Phoebe?

Phoebe: What?

Monica: Do you have a plan?

Phoebe: I don't even have a 'pl'.

Pizza Guy: Hi, one, uh, mushroom, green pepper and onion?

green pepper ph.[植]青辣椒 (red pepper ph.红辣椒)

Rachel: (miserably) No, no, that's not what we ordered… We ordered a fat-free crust with extra cheese.

order :to ask for goods to be made or supplied

fat-free :not containing any fat adj.不含脂肪的

crust :[C, usually sing.] a layer of pastry, especially on top of a pie n.馅饼皮

Pizza Guy: Wait, you're not 'G.Stephanopoulos?' Man, my dad's gonna kill me!

Monica: (leaping off of the couch and runs up) Wait! Did you say 'G.Stephanopoulos?'

Pizza Guy: Yeah. This one goes across the street, I must have given him yours. Oh, bonehead, bonehead!

go :to be sold vi.售出(主动形式表被动意思)

across (103.Rachel: I think he's across the hall. )

bonehead :(informal) a stupid person n.笨蛋

Monica: Wait, was this a-a small mediterranean guy with curiously intelligent good looks?

small adj.瘦小的

mediterranean :[only before noun] connected with the Mediterranean Sea or the countries and regions that surround it; typical of this area adj.(M-)地中海沿岸高加索人种的

intelligent :good at learning, understanding and thinking in a logical way about things; showing this ability 有才智的;聪明的

Pizza Guy: Yeah, that sounds about right.

about (102.Ross: Do that for another two hours, you might be where I am right about now.)

Monica: Was he wearing a stunning blue suit?

stunning :extremely attractive or impressive adj.[口]极漂亮的

suit :a set of clothes made of the same cloth, including a jacket and trousers/pants or a skirt

Phoebe: And-and a power tie?

Pizza Guy: No, pretty much just a towel.

pretty much (102.Chandler: Yeah, I think for us, kissing is pretty much like an opening act, y'know?)

Monica: (staggered) Oh God.

staggered :very surprised and shocked at sth you are told or at sth that happens

Pizza Guy: So you guys want me to take this back?

take sth back :if you take sth back to a shop/store, or a shop/store takes sth back, you return sth that you have bought there, for example because it is the wrong size or does not work

Monica: Are you nuts?! We've got George Stephanopoulos' pizza! (Rachel pays him, Monica grabs some binoculars, and runs to the window.)

nuts :[not before noun] (informal) crazy [俚]发疯的,傻的

binoculars : [pl.] an instrument, like two small telescopes fixed together, that makes objects that are far away seem nearer when you look through it n.双筒望远镜 

Rachel: Uh, Pheebs? Who's George Snuffleupagus?

Phoebe: Big Bird's friend. 

Monica: I see pizza!

Phoebe:Oh, I wanna see! Lemme see! Lemme see! (She runs up and takes the binoculars.)

Rachel: Hello? Who are we spying on?

hello (102.Barry: Well, thank you for giving it back. Robbie: Hello?!)

spy on sb/sth :to watch sb/sth secretly

Monica: White House adviser? Clinton's campaign guy? The one with the great hair, sexy smile, really cute butt?

White House :the US President and his or her officials

adviser :a person who gives advice, especially sb who knows a lot about a particular subject n.顾问

campaign :a series of planned activities that are intended to achieve a particular social, commercial or political aim n.竞选运动

sexy :(of a person) sexually attractive

Rachel: Oh, him, the little guy? Oh, I love him!

Phoebe: Ooh, wait.. wait, I see a woman.

Monica: Please tell me it's his mother.

Phoebe: Definitely not his mother.

definitely :(informal) a way of emphasizing that sth is true and that there is no doubt about it

Monica: Oh, no…

Phoebe: Oh, wait, she's walking across the floor.. she's walking.. she's walking.. she's going for the pizza- (Yelling) Hey, that's not for you, bitch! (Phoebe covers her mouth with her hand walks away from the window.)

go for sth/sb :to go to a place and bring sb/sth back (101.Paul: Me, I- I went for the watch)

bitch :(slang, disapproving) an offensive way of referring to a woman, especially an unpleasant one

[Scene: The Emergency Room, Joey is miming hockey pucks kitting foreheads. Chandler realises it's getting tense and goes to the receptionist again.]

Chandler: Excuse me, look, we've been here for over an hour, and a lot of people less sick than my friend have gone in. I mean, that guy with the toe thing? Who's he sleeping with?

(She slides the glass panel over and Chandler talks through it in a loud voice.) Oh, c'mon Dora, don't be mad… I know we both said some things we didn't mean, but that doesn't mean we still don't love each other. (To the waiting room.) Y'know, I feel like I've lost her.. (She slides the panel back, he turns, and it takes him by surprise.) Ba-!

mime (102.Ross: (picks up a surgical instrument and mimes a duck with it) Quack, quack..)

tense :(of a situation, an event, a period of time, etc.) in which people have strong feelings such as worry, anger, etc. that often cannot be expressed openly

sleep with sb :(informal) to have sex with sb, especially sb you are not married to (104.Phoebe: Now I don't feel so bad about sleeping with Jason Hurley.110.Joey: Some fat guy's sleeping with the store manager.)

slide :[usually +adv. / prep.] to move easily over a smooth or wet surface; to make sth move in this way vt.使滑动,使滑行

over :from one side to another side adv.从一边至另一边

panel :a square or rectangular piece of wood, glass or metal that forms part of a larger surface such as a door or wall n.镶板(镶嵌门,墙等)

in a loud voice (101.in a deep voice; in a low voice)

waiting room :a room where people can sit while they are waiting, for example for a bus or train, or to see a doctor or dentist ph.等候室

take sb by surprise :to happen unexpectedly so that sb is slightly shocked; to surprise sb

[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, the girls are all out on the balcony.]

Monica: Light still out?

out :(of fire, lights or burning materials) not or no longer burning or lit

Rachel: Yeah.

Monica: Oh. Maybe they're- napping.

nap :to sleep for a short time, especially during the day vi.打盹,小睡

Rachel: Oh please, they're having sex.

Monica and Phoebe: Shut up!

Rachel: So, whaddya think George is like?

Monica: I think he's shy.

Phoebe: Yeah?

Monica: Yeah. I think you have to draw him out. And then- when you do- he's a preppy animal.

draw sb out :to encourage sb to talk or express themselves freely 

preppy :adj.n(NAmE, informal) a young person who goes or went to an expensive private school and who dresses and acts in a way that is thought to be typical of such a school

[Scene: The Emergency Room, Ross is still going on about his first night with Carol.]

Ross: I remember the moonlight coming through the window- and her face had the most incredible glow.

incredible :(informal) extremely good adj.[口]极妙的

glow :(of a person’s body or face) to look or feel warm or pink, especially after exercise or because of excitement, embarrassment, etc. n.脸红

Chandler: Yes, the moon, the glow, the magical feeling, you did this part- Could I get some painkillers over here, please?

magical :(informal) wonderful; very enjoyable

painkiller :a drug that reduces pain n.[美,口]镇痛剂

Joey: He's right, enough already. What is the big deal about today? So you slept with her for the first time, so what? You slept with her for seven years after that.

enough already :(informal, especially NAmE) used to say that sth is annoying or boring and that you want it to stop

big deal (103. Chandler: So I have a flaw! Big deal!)

so what? :(informal) used to show that you think sth is not important, especially after sb has criticized you for it

Ross: Look, it's just a little more complicated…

complicated (102.Rachel: Oh, you've got Carol tomorrow.. When did it get so complicated?)

Chandler: Well, what? What? What is it? That she left you? That she likes women? That she left you for another woman that likes women?

Ross: Little louder, okay, I think there's a man on the twelfth floor in a coma that didn't quite hear you…

coma :a deep unconscious state, usually lasting a long time and caused by serious illness or injury n.[医]昏睡(状态)

not quite (102.Barry: Careful! They haven't quite taken yet.)

Chandler: Then what?

Ross: My first time with Carol was… (He mumbles the last part)

mumble :to speak or say sth in a quiet voice in a way that is not clear vt.含糊地说,咕哝着说

Joey: What?

Ross: It was my first time.

Joey: With Carol? (Ross gives him a look.) Oh.

Chandler: So in your whole life, you've only been with one—(He gets a look too)—oh.

Joey: Whoah, boy, hockey was a big mistake! There was a whole bunch of stuff we could've done tonight!

[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, the girls are still out on the balcony.]

Monica: Okay. Okay, I got one. Do you remember that vegetarian pate that I made that you loved so much?

vagetarian :have no meat or fish adj.素菜的

Phoebe: Uh-huh. 

Uh-huh :exclamation the way of writing the sound that people make when they understand or agree with what you have said, when they want you to continue or when they are answering ‘Yes’

Monica: Well, unless goose is a vegetable…ha haaaah!

Phoebe: Oh! Oh! Oh! Okay, fine, fine. Now I don't feel so bad about sleeping with Jason Hurley.

feel bad :to feel guilty or sorry about sth

Monica: What?! You slept with Jason?

Phoebe: You'd already broken up.

(103.Monica:I've decided to break up with Alan.)

Rachel: How long?

Phoebe: A couple hours.

Monica: Oh, that's nice!

nice :(ironic) bad or unpleasant adj.[口,讽]不好的

Rachel: Okay, okay, okay, I got one! (She sits up and the cushion she was leaning against falls off of the balcony.) Anyway- The valentine Tommy Rollerson left in your locker was really from me.

fall off (101.Phoebe: If I let go of my hair, my head will fall off. )

valentine :(also valentine card) a card that you send to sb that you love on St Valentine’s Day (14 February), often without putting your name on it n.在情人节(二月十四日)赠送给情人(或向之表示倾慕)的情人卡

locker :a small cupboard that can be locked, where you can leave your clothes, bags, etc. while you play a sport or go somewhere n.(体育馆等公共场所供个人用的)衣物柜

really :used to say what is actually the fact or the truth about sth

Monica: Excuse me?!

Rachel: Hello? Like he was really gonna send you one? (To Phoebe) She was a big girl.

Monica: Really. Well, at least 'big girls' don't pee in their pants in seventh grade!

pants :(especially NAmE) trousers宽松的长裤

Rachel: I was laughing! You made me laugh! (Monica and Rachel start to squabble)

squabble :to argue noisily about sth that is not very important vi.(为琐事)争吵 (103.They degenerate into bickering and Chandler happily starts to smoke, undisturbed.)

Phoebe: There he is! There he is!

Monica: Where?

Phoebe: Right- where we've been looking all night!

all night :整夜

Rachel: He is so cute!

cute :(informal, especially NAmE) sexually attractive

Monica: Oh, George, baby, drop the towel!

All: Yeah, drop it! Drop the towel! Please drop the—(pause)—wowww.

[Scene: The Emergency Room, Ross is absent.]

Joey: Man. Can you believe he's only had sex with one woman?

Chandler: I think it's great. Y'know, it's sweet, it's romantic…

sweet :(NAmE, informal) used to show that you approve of sth, making you feel happy and/or satisfied

Joey: Really?

Chandler: No, you kidding? The guy's a freak.. (Ross enters off camera)

freak :(disapproving) a person who is considered to be unusual because of the way they behave, look or think n.[俚]怪胎

Both: Hey, buddy.

Ross: Hi. (He is wearing a piece of steel bandaged to his nose. He tosses some forms onto reception desk.)

bandage :to wrap a bandage around a part of the body in order to protect it because it is injured 用绷带包扎

Receptionist: (sarcastic) Oh, that's attractive.

attractive :(of a person) pleasant to look at, especially in a sexual way

Chandler: Oh, I thought you were great in The Silence of the Lambs. Oh come on, admit it! All things considered, you had fun tonight.

all things considered :thinking carefully about all the facts, especially the problems or difficulties, of a situation 从全面考虑

have fun (103.Monica: 'S'going pretty good, y'know? It's nice, and, we're having fun.)

Ross: Fun? Where was the fun? Tell me specifically, which part was the fun part? Where's my puck?

tell me :(informal) used to introduce a question

specifically :in a detailed and exact way adv.明确地,具体地

Joey: Oh, ah- the kid has it.

Ross: The kid…? (To the kid) Excuse me, uh, that's, that's my puck.

Kid: I found it. Finders keepers, losers weepers. (Ross looks at Chandler for help.)

Chandler: You gotta do it, man.

Ross: (to the kid) Oh yeah? Well, I'm rubber, you're glue, whatever—(to Chandler)—can't do it. (to the kid) Listen, uh- gimme back my puck.

Kid: No.

Ross: 'Yes', how about. C'mere. Gimme!

Kid: No! No! (They start to fight over it.)

fight (about / over sth) :to have an argument with sb about sth vi.争吵[(+over/about)]

Receptionist: Hey! Hey! No rough holding in my ER!

rough :not gentle or careful; violent adj.粗暴的

holding n.[体育]持球；非法撞人

Ross: (tries to snatch it from the kid) GIVE ME MY PUCK!! (but it files out of his grasp and knocks out the receptionist)

snatch :[usually +adv. / prep.] to take sth quickly and often rudely or roughly vt.夺走,夺得

knock sb out :to make sb fall asleep or become unconscious

Ross: …Now that was fun.

Closing Credits

[Scene: Monica and Rachel's, Joey and the girls are playing twister.]

Ross: (Doing the spinning) Okay, Monica: Right foot red.

Monica: Could've played Monopoly, but nooooo.

(There's a knock on the door, Chandler opens it, and silently hands back the cushion.)

Chandler: Thanks. (The guy nods and leaves)

Ross: Okay, Pheebs: Right hand blue. (Phoebe has to bend over.)Good. (Joey stares at her butt appreciatively)

appreciative :showing pleasure or enjoyment 表示赞赏的

(The phone rings and Chandler answers it.)

Chandler: Hello? Oh, uh, Rachel, it's the Visa card people.

Rachel: Oh, okay. Will you take my place?

take sb's place :to replace sb/sth 代替某人

Chandler: Alright. (on phone) Yes, this is Rachel.

Rachel: Nooo! (She grabs the phone and Chandler takes her place on the mat.) (On phone) Hello? (Listens) Oh, yeah, no, I know, I-I haven't been using it much. (Listens) Oh, well, thanks, but, I'm okay, really.

Ross: Green. To the green.

Rachel: (on phone) I've got magic beans. (Listens) Never-never mind.

never mind :used to suggest that sth is not important

Chandler: To the left, to the left- aww! (They all collapse)

Rachel: (on phone) Ohhh… I'm fine.
