【语法归纳】
1. (1) I was wondering…表示"试探性地求助或礼貌地提问",暗指过去心里一直在想,现在把问题提出来,
希望得到一个答复;而I wonder…表示"此时此刻脑子里的念头"。
109.Rachel: But I was wondering, do you think it would be possible if I got a a-hundred-dollar advance in my salary?
109.Rachel: I was just wondering, do you think there's a possibility that you could give me an advance on my tips?
121. Monica: I believe I'm taking some classes with you and I was wondering what they were.

(2) 用过去进行时,表示委婉地请求、建议的动词还有:hope、think、want。

2. Use to的用法
(1) 当used to+动词原形时,used to是一个情态动词,没有人称和数的变化,表示"过去时常做某事而现在
不再做"。构成疑问句、否定句和强调句,要用did+use to的形式。
109.Joey: We used to work together. Obsession Girl: We did?
109.Phoebe: Well, 'cause then they'd be like my mom used to make them, you know, before she die.
703.Rachel: Didn't you use to have a pair?

(2) 当used to与be/get连用时,to为介词,后接名词或动名词,表示"习惯于/做某事"。
202.Ross: It's gonna happen a lot, so you'd better get used to it.
212.Phoebe: I'm used to playing for grown-ups.
3. (1) 某些有生命的集合名词作主语,如family、group、gang、company、committee、crowd、crew等,
谓语动词用单、复数均可。主要依据说话者强调的重点而定:若强调一个整体,谓语动词用单数;若强
调许多个体,谓语动词用复数。

109. The group is coming back from the roof.

(2) 但集合名词people和police,在任何情况下谓语动词都只能用复数形式。

【文化详解】
1. 常见的两个手势语言:air quotes和cross one's fingers
(1) Rachel: But I sort of started the whole independence thing, you know, which is actually why I took this
[does an air quotes] "job".
air quotes: imaginary quotation marks made in the air with your fingers when you are speaking, often used
to express satire, sarcasm, irony or euphemism. 手势引号,一般用来表示讽刺、挖苦、反语或委婉的态度。
(2) Joey: No. But I hear Lyme disease is open, so you know…[crosses his fingers]
cross one's fingers: putting one finger across another as a sign of hoping for good luck 中指叠在食指上,双
指交叉成X状(像十字架),表示求上帝保佑、祈求好运。cross one's fingers也可以作为一个固定短语,表
示祈祷事态的好转或成功。如:Let's cross our fingers for the victims' recovery.
2. Ross: Hey, hey, Yertle the Turtle. A classic.
《乌龟耶尔特及其它故事》(Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories),是儿童文学作家苏斯博士(Dr. Seuss)
1958年出版的一本图画书。这本书收录了三个故事,其中以第一个故事"Yertle the Turtle"最为著名。
乌龟国王耶尔特坚信,他目光所及的一切就等同于他统治的疆域。以池塘边的石头为宝座,所见的范
围极小,自然他的统治疆域就小得可怜。于是,他命令手下的乌龟叠罗汉当他的座椅,将自己抬高。
当他发现月亮比他还高,叫嚣着要建筑一个由五千六百零七只乌龟堆起的宝座时,他脚下的宝座已
经岌岌可危了。堆在最下面的那只最不起眼的乌龟已经受够了国王的自大,它做了一件小事——打
了个嗝。于是整个座椅崩塌,耶尔特摔下来变成了烂泥巴的国王,而其他所有乌龟都自由了。

节目"(very special episode)是美国上世纪八、九十年代流行的电视广告术语,用以强调指出,通常轻松
愉快的家庭剧,在本集中将会涉及到比较敏感、严肃或有争议的话题,如绑架、酒驾、死亡、吸毒、
乱性、儿童猥亵等。对于未成年人观众,收看时需要父母给于引导。
5. Chandler: Right before he reached Macy's, he broke free and was spotted flying over Washington
Square Park.
华盛顿广场公园(Washington Square Park)是纽约最负盛名的公园之一,也是热门的艺文活动场地。公园
内的喷泉已成为著名景点,当地居民和游客都会前去拜访。公园另一个显赫的景点,是华盛顿广场拱门

1966年,NBC电视台策划了一档喜剧节目《门基乐队》(The Monkees)。内容是一个由四人组成的虚构乐
队The Monkees,想要成为披头士那样成功的乐队。Ross唱的这首歌"(Theme From) The Monkees",就
是该节目的开场主题曲。同年,门基乐队像真正的乐队一样发布了首张唱片,并顺利登上流行音乐榜首。
在乐队鼎盛时期,唱片销量甚至超过了披头士乐队。电视节目在播出两年后完结,而门基乐队继续巡回
表演。1970年乐队解散,到80年代中期又重组了起来,1996年推出了一张新专辑。

奖、音乐格莱美奖并称为美国艺术四大奖。
8. 感恩节的由来
Ross: How can they do this to us, huh? It's Thanksgiving.
Monica: And I assume, Chandler, you are still boycotting all the pilgrim holidays.
Phoebe: But we're celebrating Thanksgiving in December 'cause he is lunar.
Monica: So you're free Thursday, then.
Pilgrim是指移民北美洲的英国清教徒,1620年,他们不堪忍受英国的宗教迫害,搭乘五月花号(Mayflower)
在普利茅斯登陆。第一个冬天,半数以上的移民都死于饥饿和传染病。活下来的人们在当地印第安人的帮
助下,第二年庄稼获得了意外的丰收。在1621年的秋冬之交,为了感谢上帝的赐予,他们举行了三天的
狂欢活动,并邀请当初伸出援手的印第安人一起庆祝。从此,这一习俗就沿续了下来,并逐渐风行各地。

or Thanksgiving Day)。
9. 感恩节的习俗
(1) 梅西感恩节大游行
Joey: Yeah, at Macy's. You were the Obsession girl, right?
Chandler: No, no, the actual cartoon character. Of course the balloon. It's all over the news. Right before
he reached Macy's, he broke free and was spotted flying over Washington Square Park.
梅西百货(Macy's)是美国中高档的连锁百货商店,纽约旗舰店开业于1924年。截至2012年6月,梅西百货
在全美共计有800间店面,成为真正的全国品牌。由梅西百货公司主办的一年一度的梅西感恩节大游行
(Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade),始于1927年。游行在感恩节上午开始,持续三个小时,数万人参加,
声势浩大,游行队伍要一直走到梅西总部所在地的34街。在第一届大游行中,队伍里有从动物园借来的
山羊、骆驼、大象等各种活生生的动物。后来巨型卡通形象(cartoon character)的气球(balloon)代替了这
些动物朋友,成为梅西感恩节大游行的重头戏之一。
(2) 扯许愿骨
Phoebe: Ooh, you guys have to make a wish.
Monica: Make a wish?
Phoebe: Come on, you know, Thanksgiving. [makes a gesture of pulling the wishbone]
感恩节宴会后,人们有时会做一些传统的游戏,如分开许愿骨(wishbone)。将火鸡胸部的Y型三叉骨取出,
两人各执一端,默念自己的愿望然后一起扯断它。人们相信,拿到长的那段的人,他的愿望就会得以实
现。
10. 感恩节的传统食物
(1) Rachel: Wait, wait, Chandler, this is what you're having for Thanksgiving dinner? What, what, what is it
with you and this holiday?
Monica: Okay, right about now the turkey should be crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside.
Chandler: Okay, we all laughed when you did it with the stuffing, but that's not funny anymore.
Chandler: Shall I carve?
Phoebe: Ugly Naked Guy's taking his turkey out of the oven. Oh, he just sat in gravy.
Joey: You get a little piece of turkey on your fork, a little cranberry sauce, and a Tot!
烤火鸡(roasted turkey)是感恩节晚餐(Thanksgiving dinner)的传统主菜,通常是把火鸡肚子里塞上填料
(stuffing,如面包、凤梨、火腿、虾干),然后整只烤出。端上桌后,由男主人用刀切成薄片(carve)分
给大家。烤火鸡的汁,用来制成黏稠的卤汁(gravy),作为吃火鸡的蘸料。蔓越莓酱(cranberry sauce),
也是吃火鸡时的一种调味酱。
(2) Phoebe: Look out! Incoming pumpkin pie!
Ross: Will you make the mashed potatoes with the lumps?

Ross: Hello? This isn't a yam. Yam comes in the purple cans.
Monica: Mmm, looking good. Okay, cider's mulling. Turkey's turking. Yams are yamming.
感恩节的传统食物还有南瓜派(pumpkin pie)、肉汁土豆泥(mashed potatoes with gravy)、红薯泥(yam/
sweet potatoes)、甜玉米(sweet corn)等,因为这些植物原本都是美洲所特有的。此外还有各种应季的
蔬果和果汁,如加糖和香料煨热的苹果汁(mulled cider)。
(3) Ross: Will you make the mashed potatoes with the lumps?
Phoebe: Oh, I just, I thought we could have them whipped and then add some peas and onions.
Joey: Hey, Monica, I got a question. I don't see any Tater Tots.
在Monica主办的第一次感恩节晚宴上,每个人都想吃自己妈妈做的那种土豆。Ross想要的是带小块的土

(1) 番茄浓汤(tomato soup)是一道经典的西式汤肴,也是最受美国人欢迎的安慰食品(comfort food)之一。
将西红柿、橄榄油、黄油、洋葱、蒜头、鸡汤等各种材料切细绞碎,一并放在锅里煮一小时,直到食材
煮融,汤变粘稠。番茄浓汤常用酸奶油或油煎面包丁(croutons)作为配料,用罗勒叶(basil)调味。超市有
罐装的番茄浓汤出售。
(2) 烤奶酪三明治(grilled cheese sandwich或grilled cheese),把两片面包中间夹上奶酪片,面包片外层抹
上黄油,在平底锅上煎至两面金黄、奶酪融化即成。
(3) Funruns是一种洋葱味的玉米膨化小食品,呈炸洋葱圈(fried onion rings)的形状。1969年,由百事旗
下生产休闲食品的子公司菲多利(Frito-lay)推出。
12. Ross: When you come out I'll buy you a bagel, and then we'll go to the zoo.
百吉饼(bagel)又叫硬面包圈、贝果面包,是美国人喜爱的早餐食物。百吉饼是将发酵的面团揉成圈型后,
放至沸水里煮过再进行烘烤。这种特殊的制作工艺,赋予了它独特的表皮光泽及耐嚼口感。除了原味,
比较常见的是撒有罂粟籽和芝麻籽的,肉桂、蓝莓、蒜蓉、洋葱等也都是时下较流行的口味。食用百吉
饼时,一般将它横切开来,涂上奶油干酪(cream cheese)、果酱、花生酱、蜂蜜,又或者夹生菜、蕃茄、
腌肉、鸡肉,变化多端。百吉饼据传由犹太面包师傅发明,深受犹太人的欢迎。百吉饼搭配奶油干酪及
烟熏鲑鱼(俗称lox and a schmear),被认为是一道传统的美国犹太菜肴(Ross有犹太血统)。
