【原创】志萍版老友记英语笔记之14句英语谚语

谚语在语言系统里常常是相对独立的存在,它没那么遵循语言规则,多是口头创作的短句或韵语,但
又广泛流传于民间;它往往言简意赅,但是含义丰富,意味深长,蕴含着长久不变的哲理和智慧。

 

英语同样有很多的谚语(saying),常常能起到画龙点睛的作用,增加语言的鲜明性和生动性,恰当地
使用谚语能让语言活泼有趣,更受别人欢迎。对各位同学来说,在各种英语考试中的写作部分,一个
精妙的谚语往往能给阅卷老师留下深刻的印象,多增加个两分不成问题。

 

那么,我们就来学习一下《老友记》中出现的14句英语谚语吧。

 

104.Bratty Boy: I found it. Finders keepers, losers weepers.

Finders keepers, losers weepers.: (saying) If someone loses something, and another finds it, the "finder" could
claim that it
is now his, because "Finders keepers, losers weepers." The one who finds it gets to keep it, and
the one who lost it will cry.
 (often used by children) (谚语)"谁捡归谁,失主倒霉"。在孩子们的世界中,谁捡到
东西就归谁,谁丢了东西就自己哭去吧。但在现实生活中,捡到东西据为己有可能会受到道德谴责和法律制裁哦。

 

118.Phoebe: 'Oh, hello, kettle? This is Monica. You're black.'

Oh, hello, kettle? This is Monica. You're black.: 来自谚语"the pot calling the kettle black", used to say that you
should not criticize someone for a fault that you have yourself
 锅笑壶黑;乌鸦说猪黑;五十步笑百步(自己跟
别人有同样的不足,却毫无自知之明地去讥笑别人)

 

118.Rachel: Oh, that's fine. We'll see who has the last laugh there, monkey boy.

have the last laugh: to be successful when you were not expected to be, making your opponents look stupid or
silly 笑到最后;赢得最后的胜利并让讥笑者尴尬
(<例>he who laughs last laughs best: (saying) used to tell
someone not to be too proud of their present success; in the end another person may be more successful
(谚语)笑到最后,笑得最好)

without any outside help whatsoever.

silver lining: something positive that comes out of a sad or unpleasant situation 不幸中的一线希望;不快中的一丝
慰藉
(<例>every cloud has a silver lining: (saying) every sad or difficult situation has a positive side (谚语)每朵
乌云都镶有银边;黑暗中总有一丝光明)

 

212.Ross: What? What? Some weebles actually do fall down? Huh? A stitch in time now only saves
seven
? What you got?

a stitch in time saves nine: (saying) it is better to deal with something immediately because if you wait it may
become worse or more difficult and cause extra work (谚语)小洞及时补,免遭大洞苦

 

224.Phoebe: Chandler, you gotta stop staring at the door. It's like a watched pot. You know, if you
keep
looking at it then the door is never gonna boil. I think what you have to do is try not to-

A watched pot never boils.: (saying) used to say that when you are impatient for something to happen, time
seems to pass very slowly
 (谚语)心急水不开,仿佛越是等待什么,什么就偏偏来迟

 

302.Phoebe: Oh, well, you…are my lucky penny.
lucky penny: 来自谚语"Find a penny, pick it up, and all the day you'll have good luck." 发现一分钱,捡起来,一整
天你都会拥有好运。

 

311.Joey: Really? That's great! You and my sister, sitting in a tree.

sitting in a tree: 来自谚语:A and B sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes love, then comes marriage, then
comes baby in a baby carriage!

 

410.Rachel: Chandler, you have the best taste in men.

Chandler: Well, like father, like son.

like father, like son: (saying) used to say that a son’s character or behaviour is similar to that of his father (谚语)
其父必有其子

 

603.Monica: Love is the best medicine.
Chandler: 
That's "laughter".
Laughter is the best medicine.: (谚语)开怀大笑是一剂良药

 

621.Chandler: Are you judging them by their covers? 'Cause you're really not supposed to do that.
don't judge a book by its cover: (saying) used to say that you should not form an opinion about someone or
something from their appearance only (谚语)勿以貌取人

 

623.Rachel: I just wanna know what, what is behind this-this strong, silent exterior. You know, they
say that
still waters run deep and I, I wanna swim in yours.

still waters run deep: (saying) a person who seems to be quiet or shy may surprise you by knowing a lot or having
deep feelings (谚语)静水流深(暗喻沉静或寡言者或会有强烈情感、丰富知识或非凡智慧等)

 

702.Chandler: Oh, I got some thoughts on the music.
Rachel: Oh
, Chandler, too many cooks.
too many cooks spoil the broth: (also too many cooks in the kitchen) (saying) if too many people are involved in
doing something, it will not be done well (谚语)厨子多了煮坏汤;人多反倒误事

 

723.Chandler: Yeah, he is more of a "if you've got it, flaunt it" kind of father.
if you've got it, flaunt it: (humorous) (saying) used to tell someone that they should not be afraid of allowing other
people to see their qualities and abilities or their beauty
 (谚语)假如你拥有就炫耀它吧
